On February 22, 2021, 29 distressed OFWs underwent a capacity building training on enterprise development by the Overseas Workers Welfare Administration (OWWA) in partnership with the Migration Services Division under the Quezon City – Public Employment Service Office (QC-PESO MSD) at the Quezon City Hall compound as part of the social preparation needed for entrepreneurship initiatives. The COVID-19 pandemic caused massive economic disruptions globally resulting in the economic displacement of hundreds of thousands of OFWs, leaving them with very little choice but to return to the Philippines.
The Department of Foreign Affairs recorded a total of 327,511 cases of repatriated OFWs in the year 2020 alone. Given these numbers, economic reintegration will be one the most essential support the government can extend to OFWs. The Enterprise Development Training aims to provide basic knowledge on basic accounting and financial techniques to capacitate them to make informed financial decisions to overcome the economic challenges brought about by the pandemic. The program aims to equip OFWs with knowledge that will support their economic development.
